PETRONAS brought Aidilfitri cheer to some 260 families from six villages in Ranau and Kota Belud which were among areas affected by the 5 June earthquake and subsequent mud floods.
The national oil and gas company, through its signature corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS, presented food and financial aid to families from Kampung Lembah Permai, Kampung Muhibbah and Kampung Liwagu in Ranau, as well as Kampung Kiau Nuluh, Kampung Kiau Taburi and Kampung Kiau Bersatu in Kota Belud.
"We at PETRONAS are deeply saddened by the recent earthquake and flashfloods that have affected livelihood and caused damage to properties in Ranau and Kota Belud. Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS is our way of bringing joy and lending a helping hand to communities in need in areas where we operate," said PETRONAS Head of Sabah and Labuan Regional Office Puan Julita Ontol.
“It is therefore our sincere hope that this contribution brings some respite to the families affected by the disasters,” added Julita, at the presentation ceremony held in Kampung Lembah Permai which was attended by 200 recipients.
Also present at the event were Ranau Assistant District Officer Mohd Yassin Ibrahim, PETRONAS Sabah and Labuan Chairman Encik Mohamed Firouz Asnan, Kampung Lembah Permai Village Security and Development Committee Chairman Guahil Gumat and Kundasang Community Development Officer Kasinin Basir.
"We would like to record our sincere gratitude to PETRONAS for its continuous support and assistance to those affected by the catastrophe, in addition to the recent contribution made to the State Disaster Relief Fund," said Mohd Yassin.
After the handing over of contribution at Kampung Lembah Permai, the PETRONAS team proceeded to Kampung Kiau Nuluh in Kota Belud to present similar contribution to 60 recipients comprising mostly elderly people.
One of the recipients was Lunsin Koroh, an 87-year-old retired mountain guide. “I was a mountain guide for nearly 30 years. Nowadays, I no longer climb the mountain as I’m getting old. Pounsikou (thank you) to PETRONAS for the assistance; we appreciate it very much,” he said.
The Sentuhan Kasih programme followed a RM3 million contribution to the State Disaster Relief Fund from PETRONAS last week, which was presented by its President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin to the Chief Minister of Sabah for the victims of the Ranau earthquake.
Meanwhile, a total of 200 cartons of bottled water were collected in a donation drive organised by PETRONAS in collaboration with five schools participating in the PETRONAS All About Youth (PETRONAS AAY) programme.
The contribution was delivered on 24 June to SMK Narinang in Kota Belud, which was experiencing a shortage of drinking water supply following mud slides that clogged water flowing from Sungai Liwagu, Ranau.
Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS is an annual programme piloted in 2005. The programme is designed to drive the company’s social agenda by reaching out to those in need during our festive seasons. Most importantly, the programme nurtures the spirit of giving and volunteerism among its employees. To date, PETRONAS has a growing pool of volunteers who are dedicated in community relations and its many social initiatives.
