Over the years, the incidences of encroachments by fishermen in the restricted zones near our offshore platforms continue to be a grave concern not only to the safety of the fishermen but also to the safety of the personnel working onboard the facilities. This is despite clear restrictions and warnings by the authorities that prohibits entry of unauthorised vessels within the 500-metre restricted zone surrounding the platforms which posed risk of potential boat collision.
In addition, fish poisoning and fish bombing activities were also detected within the restricted zones which had caused significant damage to our platforms and pipelines.
Therefore, through the “Sahabat Maritim Programme”, PETRONAS together with Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) launched a Public Service Announcement (PSA) video-clip entitled ‘Kempen Keselamatan di Laut Jauhi Pelantar Minyak’. The video-clip aims to further create awareness and educate fishing communities on the dangers of conducting fishing activities within the 500-metre radius surrounding the platforms, This video-clip which was filmed by National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), was launched on 2 March 2021 and will be aired for 12 months on local television channels. This is part of PETRONAS’ continuing collaborative efforts with MMEA which began in 2015.

However, we do need the cooperation and support by all parties, including the general public and the fishermen community in order to keep everyone safe.
