PETRONAS’ Pengerang Cogen Plant bags the "Sustainable Plant of the Year 2024" Award in Asia
Media Releases
Singapore– October 23, 2024 –  PETRONAS is pleased to announce that its Pengerang Cogen Plant (PCP) has been awarded the prestigious title ‘Sustainable Plant of the Year 2024’, at the Asian Downstream Summit Awards today for its energy efficiency project

The award recognises the successful implementation of an innovative, analytics-driven energy efficiency project designed to enhance operational efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure plant reliability.

This optimisation solution employs a data-driven approach to identify opportunities for improvement in two key areas: System Efficiency and Equipment Efficiency. It addresses variations in steam and power demand, maintaining efficient operations around the clock.

As a result of this initiative, PCP has achieved a notable reduction in fuel gas consumption, leading to lower operational costs and a significant decrease in carbon emissions.

PCP Head of Plant Irsan Yuz Abu Hanifah stated that the three-step approach -Value Hunting, Solution Development & Deployment, and Change Management - has resulted to the success of the energy efficiency project, particularly in reducing of fuel gas cost and achieving carbon abatement.

He further explained, "The reduction in CO2e emissions is comparable to the amount of carbon dioxide that would typically be absorbed by 3.2 million trees over the course of a year, contributing to the positive environmental impact from this implementation.

“This significant impact has propelled PCP to win the Sustainable Plant of the Year award in the Asian region. However, we recognise that we have a long way to go. To drive long-term impact, PETRONAS has launched a capability program aimed at shifting the mindset of our workforce to contribute to the organisation’s sustainability goals,” he added.
In addition to this carbon abatement efforts, the implementation of this optimiser also positions PIC as a competitive player in the energy market. This initiative enables the petrochemical complex to deliver cost-effective energy solutions, offering significant advantages for investors and the wider petrochemical industry.

PETRONAS takes pride in receiving this esteemed award at the Asian Downstream Summit 2024, solidifying PCP’s position as the best facility in the Asian region and remains committed to exploring new methods to further reduce the industry's carbon footprint.

This commitment aligns with the priorities outlined in Malaysia's Budget 2025, recently tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which emphasises sustainability initiatives and the introduction of carbon taxes, reflecting the government’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions throughout the energy sector.

Additional Information:
The PCP, located within the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), is a wholly owned subsidiary of PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Utilities & Facilities (PRPC UF) which is a part of PRPC Group. PRPC Group is spearheaded by
Encik Kamal Bahrin.

The Three-Step Approach
It begins with Value Hunting, a domain-led, data-driven diagnostic process that identifies potential value in energy efficiency initiatives. Upon gathering these insights, the focus shifts to Solution Development & Deployment, where advanced digital solutions are implemented to optimise performance and enhance efficiency. Finally, the approach emphasises Change Management through a capability program aimed at advocating carbon awareness among the workforce, ensuring that employees are well-equipped to contribute to sustainability goals.

Together, these integrated steps leverage digital solutions to promote effective carbon abatement and establish a culture of energy efficiency throughout the plant.
