Pengerang, 25 JANUARY 2018 – The Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), PETRONAS' largest downstream investment to date is on track for overall start up in Q1 2019.
Positioned as a regional downstream oil and petrochemical industrial hub, the PIC will pave a new frontier of technology and economic development in the Southeast Asia Region.
"The project, received Final Investment Decision in 2014 and has involved more than 40 major EPCC packages, 13 licensors, over 200 suppliers and contractors, has achieved an overall progress of 84% as at December 2017 and is on track to meet overall start up in Q1, 2019" said, PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation (PRPC) Sdn Bhd Head of Stakeholder, Communication and Risk Management Division, Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz at a media familiarization visit of the PIC, today.
The project, which covers 6,242 acres, involves up to 70,000 personnel of 65 nationalities working towards the final leg of construction, is projected to take some 350 million project man hours to complete.
"Considering the scale of the project's construction, ensuring the safety and security of the people on site is paramount," said PRPC Head of Health, Safety, Security and Environment, Encik Saifuddin Shah Sowkkatali. "At PETRONAS, we have processes, standards and procedures in place to ensure a safe working environment and everything we do is aimed at ensuring that the construction progresses safely."
The project has an all-encompassing Health, Safety, Security and Environment system and processes in place to mitigate and manage risks in all activities across the project. This includes compliance and governance, execution management, assurance communication, incident management and emergency preparedness.
The PIC houses a 300,000bpd refinery and a petrochemical complex designed to produce premium differentiated and specialty chemicals. Apart from supplying feedstock to the petrochemical complex, the refinery will also produce petroleum products for the domestic market and meet Malaysia's Euro-5 legislative requirements.
