Malaysia Upstream Awards 2020 Goes Digital: Recognising Outstanding PACs Across Malaysia

In contrast to the usual awards ceremony format in view of the current COVID-19 global pandemic, Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), successfully hosted the inaugural Malaysia Upstream Awards (MUA) 2020 broadcast live from KL Convention Centre via Microsoft Teams Live Events to over 400 audiences consisting of the MPM fraternity and PACs (both Operators and equity partners).

The event was held on 17 August 2020, coinciding with when PETRONAS was established 46 years ago by way of the Petroleum Development Act 1974. The MUA 2020 serves to appreciate and recognise Petroleum Arrangement Contractors’ (“PACs”) remarkable achievements in their role as Operators in various technical and non-technical areas of Malaysia Upstream business for 2019.

It was a memorable day as we celebrated the birth of PETRONAS, close to half a century ago with the PACs. The past 46 years had been an evolving journey for Upstream Malaysia alongside the changing industry environment and the challenging times. Celebrating with all the PACs that have been contributing to this journey, had definitely made this day a more special one. Indeed, what a way to celebrate.

This year’s theme, “The next Chapter Through the Continued Pursuit of Excellence”, was designed to aptly capture the need for us to move towards the next chapter for Upstream Malaysia. The industry has seen many unprecedented challenges. Nevertheless, it has thrived and emerged stronger than before. This is another chapter of such, where the industry needs to continuously pursue for excellence in HSSE, Reservoir, Operational, Project, Commercial and People aspects.

The event began with ‘Foreword by Firouz’ session where Encik Mohamed Firouz Asnan, Senior Vice President, Malaysia Petroleum Management, shared the 2019 Key Achievements and the long-term Key Result Areas (KRA) for Upstream Malaysia. This forward-looking speech was indeed an inspiration to guide the industry through to the next chapter, precisely anchoring on the theme of the event.
