PCG Continues to Inculcate Sustainable Habits Among Youths in Thailand Through Be Green Programme

Kuala Lumpur, 17 October 2024 – PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG), one of the largest chemical producers in Southeast Asia, continues its Be Green programme in Thailand for the second year running by conducting a clean-up activity at Lat Phrao Canal in collaboration with TerraCycle Thai Foundation (TerraCycle) and students from selected schools.

The programme is aimed at inspiring the local community on responsible plastic waste management while contributing to reducing plastic pollution.

“The Be Green expansion across international borders signifies our commitment to advancing circular economy not only in Malaysia, but in neighbouring countries where PCG operates in. Through Be Green, we hope to empower the next generation to continue the momentum towards a cleaner future by redefining plastic wastes into a valuable resource. Our journey begins with education, cultivating sustainability habits from a young age and embedding them into our daily lives to create a lasting impact, benefiting the community and beyond,” said Mazuin Ismail, PCG’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer.

PCG’s Be Green programme debuted in Thailand in 2023, where PCG - through its subsidiary PCM (Thailand) Co. Ltd, and TerraCycle, worked with local students to remove ocean-bound plastics from the Lat Phrao Canal.

Beyond clean-up activities, this year’s programme includes new exciting activities such as teaching the schools on effective ways to manage a Waste Bank where students are exposed to business management skills and computer software literacy, on top of environmental conservation skills.

Under this programme, TerraCycle will also be engaging in a one-year mentorship with the selected schools to provide online coaching on sustainability initiatives while raising awareness on waste reduction and proper sorting among the community. In addition, a handbook will also be disseminated among the students as a guide detailing on Waste Bank Management and environmental conservation.

“We received encouraging participation among the local community during Be Green’s first canal clean-up in Thailand last year. Through this programme, we are able to educate the public on managing plastic waste responsibly, contributing to Thailand’s Roadmap on Plastic Waste Management 2018 – 2030,” said Rungnapa Chinvigai, CEO of PCM (Thailand).

Be Green, established in 2013, aims to create positive impact on the society through education and collaborative recycling activities. PCG promotes responsible waste management and 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) through engagements with schools and surrounding local communities in within PCG’s areas of operations. This is in line with PCG’s New Plastics Economy (NPE) agenda and social impact strategy, while contributing to the global transition towards circular economy.

Be Green is also in line with one of PETRONAS’ social impact pillars – Planting Tomorrow – which focuses on educating young minds on the importance of biodiversity and sustainable living.
