Sungai Udang, 2 May 2024 –Malaysian Refining Company Sdn Bhd (MRCSB), a subsidiary of PETRONAS and a refining site operator with one of the largest capacities in Malaysia announced the renaming of its Melaka Refinery Complex to Melaka Energy Park to commemorate the company’s Pearl Jubilee milestone.

The energy park will focus on further expanding its capabilities to fulfil the needs for cleaner, safer, and more efficient energy, thus proving its presence as a key player in the domestic and global energy landscape to catering to multiple industries including aviation, manufacturing and mass consumer market.

Vice President of Refining, Marketing & Trading, Downstream, PETRONAS, and Chairman of MRCSB, Ahmad Adly Alias said, “As we continue to chart our journey into three decades of success, our commitment to excellence has driven us to look for ways of equipping ourselves with the capability and flexibility to produce various types of petroleum products to meet the energy demands beyond domestic markets.”

“For example, our base oil is used in the fluid formulation for the eight-time World Champion, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team. This represents our continuous efforts to remain competitive in the market, capturing every opportunity we see fit to create value for our customers and stakeholders,” added Ahmad Adly.

Melaka Energy Park contributes significantly to meeting 60 percent of Peninsular Malaysia’s petroleum product demand, boasting a daily production rate of 300,000 barrels. It is equipped with several specialised processing units designed with the flexibility to handle various crude oils from sweet crudes to heavier imported crude oils. The latest addition to the energy park – the DELIMA plant – launched in 2021, can produce EURO-5 Diesel, which has lower sulphur content and lesser toxic emissions, making it a cleaner fuel alternative.

MRCSB Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Farid Yacob said, “Looking back, there are many dreams that we once thought were far-fetched from our wildest imagination had already been realised throughout so many efforts and the endless commitment from each of us. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together over the past 30 years, and I am excited to see what the future holds for MRCSB.”

For the past three decades, MRCSB, with the support of local authorities and the surrounding communities have contributed to the economic growth and social development of the state. Beyond providing job opportunities to the natives of Melaka, the company supports the advancement of the state’s human capital through educational programmes for students whilst contributing to environmental conservation via nature-based solutions.

The renaming event, which was also attended by Datuk Sazali Hamzah, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, Downstream, PETRONAS, concluded with a torch-bearing to commemorate PETRONAS’ 50th Anniversary and Homecoming, symbolising the Group's continued legacy and commitment in building talents for progress of the industry and nation.

Ignited at the park, the torch is the second of the Twin Torches, which will go on its own journey nationwide paying tribute to the people and places that have contributed to PETRONAS' growth and success for the past five decades. The first torch was ignited in Labuan recently, marking the inauguration of the milestone celebration, which will culminate in Kuala Lumpur on 17 August.
