KUALA LUMPUR, 16 April 2025 – PETRONAS Energy & Gas Trading Sdn. Bhd. (PEGT), as one of the licensed gas shippers in Peninsular Malaysia, has taken proactive measures to minimise the impact of gas supply interruption following the Putra Heights pipeline fire incident by securing additional gas supply volume to affected areas.
PEGT is actively engaging with Kementerian Peralihan Tenaga Dan Transformasi Air (PETRA) and Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST), and is collaborating with Transporter, Distributor, supplier, other shippers, customers and relevant stakeholders, to explore ways to manage gas delivery constraints at affected locations.
PEGT has successfully secured an additional 155 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) bringing up the supply volume to 400 MMSCFD of gas supply via the Trans Thailand-Malaysia (TTM) gas pipeline system. This additional gas supply to the Northern region of Peninsular Malaysia, including Bestari Jaya, Meru and Kapar has stabilised the supply and reduced supply shortfall in the Northern and Central regions.
PEGT has also made available additional 86 MMSCFD supply of gas to the Serdang City Gate (Serdang CG) for the Interconnected Klang Valley Distribution network. We are working together with Gas Malaysia Berhad towards increasing its gas distribution network supply capacity.
Four power plants were initially affected i.e. Connaught Bridge, Pulau Indah, Serdang, and Kapar. However, PEGT can confirm gas supply to Kapar and Serdang power plants has been reinstated, and both facilities have resumed normal operations. Additionally, PEGT has facilitated gas supply to Kapar Energy Ventures to support unit start-up requirements.
Based on the latest plan and progress shared by PETRONAS Gas Berhad (PGB) as the infrastructure owner, the present best estimate for restoration is at the earliest on 1 July 2025, subject to outcome of ongoing investigations, regulatory approvals and actual progress at site. PEGT has also communicated this timeline to its affected customers, following updates received from PGB.
PEGT together with ST, PETRA, Grid System Operator and power stations will continue to work closely to ensure minimal interruption to the Power Sector. PEGT remains committed in ensuring stability of gas supply and will continue to work closely with respective authorities and stakeholders
