For more than a decade, we have helped power the team to 115 Grand Prix victories, a record eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships (2014-2021) and seven consecutive Drivers’ Championships (2014-2020).

The level of success, unmatched in F1’s history, is enabled by a continuous drive for innovation via our cutting-edge Fluid Technology Solutions.

We will be continuing our partnership as we enter a new era of sustainable fuel regulations in 2026. This renewed focus will take us towards two decades at the pinnacle of motorsports and demonstrates our commitment and determination to innovate, improve and create a more sustainable future.

Our History in F1

We entered the Formula 1 arena in 1995 with our sponsorship of the Red Bull-Sauber PETRONAS F1 team, the first bold step towards positioning PETRONAS as a global brand.

This effort was further enhanced in 1999 when we secured the title sponsorship rights for the F1 Grand Prix in Malaysia.

In 2005, we extended our long-standing relationship with Sauber when PETRONAS became the Premium Partner to the BMW-Sauber F1 Team.

In 2009, we signed a five-year agreement with Mercedes-Benz as the title partner, when the Silver Arrows team rejoined the grid for the first time since 1955.

Currently, with eight consecutive Constructors’ and seven consecutive Drivers’ Championship wins, our ongoing partnership with Mercedes-AMG continues to grow from strength to strength.

Our Role in the Race

We provide crucial technical support to Mercedes-AMG in the fast-paced world of Formula 1, where split seconds define success.

Our Trackside Fluid Engineers conduct on-site chemical and performance analysis of the fuel and lubricants used by the team, providing them with real-time input on the engine’s health.

They gather about 150 samples before and after every race, which they then analyse in a laboratory using three essential equipment: gas chromatography, a viscometer and a spectrometer. Gas chromatography shows the presence and composition of specific carbon substances, while the viscometer helps determine viscosity, and the spectrometer aids in identifying elemental composition.

This comprehensive analysis is crucial for the team’s compliance with rules set by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), as well as establishing accurate results to ensure optimal performance of the team’s engine during training, qualification and race day.

Our Sustainability Performance

The world of Formula One is due to change forever. New regulations to create a more sustainable series will make our partnership with Mercedes-AMG more important than ever.

For 2026 and beyond, F1 is targeting a 50% electrification of the power unit, along with the development and use of 100% advanced sustainable fuels.

To achieve these goals, new innovative solutions are required to lead the way in the sport’s next era, and this presents us with a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate our expertise.

Our extensive experience in formulating Fluid Technology Solutions for the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team leaves us fully equipped to now lead the next generation of fuel development. Our capabilities will allow us to enhance our technology to produce and supply 100% sustainable fuel for the next-gen power units.

With this renewed focus within F1, we can use this testbed of development to accelerate our own journey towards greater sustainability. It is no longer just about speed – for our fuel to be competitive it must also be cleaner.

And the benefits of this synergy between PETRONAS and Mercedes-AMG will extend beyond the racetrack. Our learnings and innovations from competing in F1 will benefit the PETRONAS’ wider customer base – providing energy which is cleaner and more sustainable
