KUALA LUMPUR, 22 January 2025 – This Chinese New Year, PETRONAS proudly presents 'Stay', a compelling film directed by renowned filmmaker Caleb Huang.
'Stay' tells the poignant story of Xiao Bao, a young boy who visits his relatives for the Chinese New Year, but, in an unexpected turn of events, ends up staying with them long after the celebration as they lovingly accept him as part of their family. This follows a heart-breaking discussion between Xiao Bao’s mother and his relatives to leave her son under their care, a selfless sacrifice on her part in the hope that Xiao Bao can lead a better life. But Xiao Bao, being young and oblivious to life’s hardship, could not understand why and cries helplessly for his mom to stay.
Xiao Bao's journey echoes the experiences of many during the 1980s, a time when economic hardships led parents to entrust their children to financially stable relatives. This profoundly moving decision changes Xiao Bao's life forever, and it takes him years to fully understand the true reason his mother chose not to stay.
Set against the backdrop of the beautiful rural area of Kuala Selangor, the film vividly brings to life the natural beauty and warmth of the people during that era.
PETRONAS Senior General Manager of Strategic Communications, Group Strategic Relations and Communications, Siti Azlina Abdul Latif said, “Through this heartfelt story, we are reminded of the enduring values of empathy, compassion, and mutual care, principles deeply embedded in Malaysia's cultural fabric. 'Stay' serves as a powerful reflection of how these values have shaped and sustained our communities across generations.
“PETRONAS hopes this film will inspire all Malaysians to continue fostering unity and support for one another, strengthening the bonds that define us as a nation. We hope this story inspires Malaysians to continue uplifting and supporting one another,” she added.
‘Stay’ is the first of its festive series under the theme Beyond Close Doors and premieres on 22 January 2025 on PETRONAS' official YouTube and Facebook pages.
