Community Engagement

Why It Matters

We remain dedicated to creating long term value for the local communities where we operate through PCG Community Engagement and Social Impact Programmes.

Addressing diverse community needs forms the cornerstone of our efforts toward social development and sustainable community support. This involves building trust and confidence among investors, customers, employees and the wider public through meaningful initiatives.

By aligning our community engagement efforts with stakeholder expectations, we enhance the effectiveness of our programmes and meet the needs of the communities. Implementing initiatives with long-lasting positive impacts allows us to enhance the well-being of communities and empower them to thrive, affirming our role to building relationships and trust with the local communities.

Our Approach
  • We aim to positively impact the local communities where we operate, guided by the PETRONAS Social Impact Management Framework. Under this framework, our social impact programmes focus on three key pillars: Environment (Planting Tomorrow), Education (Powering Knowledge), and Community Well-being and Development (Uplifting Lives). By emphasising these pillars, the framework ensures our initiatives create meaningful impacts and remain aligned with PCG’s broader sustainability goals.

  • We take a hands-on approach to our social impact programmes, actively engaging in initiatives that create tangible change through employee volunteerism and collaborations with NGOs and local government agencies.

  • We will continue focusing on impactful social impact activations by promoting sustainable livelihoods and conserving the environment, in alignment with PETRONAS Sustainability Agenda. We aim to drive initiatives that enhance capabilities, skills, self-sufficiency and overall livelihoods, to create lasting, positive change.
How We Provide Value
01
Education (Powering Knowledge)

To complement the Be Green programme, we published the multilingual Plastic, Sustainability & You Education (PSYE) supplementary module in 2019. Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) and the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA), the module is designed for primary and secondary schools, and covers topics such as plastic recycling, circular economy, and sustainable consumption.

We conduct chemical safety awareness programmes in schools via our Safe Handling of Chemicals for School (SHOC4School) initiative. Through this initiative, we provide knowledge and training on proper chemical management, along with basic knowledge of first aid, to science-stream students, teachers and school laboratory assistants.

Our subsidiary, Perstorp, supports Perstorp Technical High School in Sweden, specialising in science and technology. They also partner with local chemical companies and communities to support a local science center, inspiring children and students about chemistry.

02
Community Wellbeing & Development (Uplifting Lives)

  • The Community Upskilling Programme is a strategic initiative empowering communities by enhancing their skills, knowledge, and capabilities. It equips participants with practical, innovative skills to improve livelihoods, promote sustainability, and address local challenges.

Activities include workshops, training sessions, and hands-on projects leveraging existing resources for impactful outcomes. Focus areas typically include entrepreneurship, waste upcycling, sustainable practices, and digital literacy.

By fostering self-reliance and encouraging innovation, the programme improves participants’ socio-economic well-being and contributes to long-term community development. It is a transformative effort to build resilient and self-sustaining communities through education, collaboration, and skill enhancement.

03
Environment (Planting Tomorrow)

  • Launched in 2013, our flagship Be Green programme promotes responsible plastic use and handling by educating communities about waste management and the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle). Aligning with the New Plastics Economy’s vision of a sustainable circular economy, Be Green engages diverse participants – including students, local communities, government organisations, and universities – through activities such as recyclable waste collection competitions and beach and canal clean-ups.

  • In 2023, we expanded the programme internationally to Indonesia and Thailand, through our subsidiaries, PT PCM Kimia Indonesia and PCM (Thailand) Co. Ltd extending its impact to these regions.

  • Our Tree/Mangrove Conservation and Rehabilitation initiative preserves and restores vital mangrove ecosystems, which are essential for biodiversity and climate resilience. Through our ecocare programme, we focus on reforesting and rehabilitating ecologically sensitive mangrove habitats, supporting diverse wildlife and mitigating climate change impacts.

  • This conservation efforts has evolved from managing the Kertih river ecosystem to establishing the ecocare Environmental Education Centre (EEC). The EEC serves as a learning and advocacy hub, educating students and community members about the importance of natural environmental conservation. We’ve partnered with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) to enhance the EEC and its programme, further promoting mangrove conservation, rehabilitation and biodiversity.

  • We have also conducted mangrove replanting in Sayakha, India, creating a ‘Green Wall’ on the Ambetha Village coast and providing local families with employment opportunities to execute the project.
