In an effort to ease the burden of those badly affected by the flood, PETRONAS has embarked on group-wide Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and flood donation drives to support the victims in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang respectively.
Towards this end, PETRONAS through its wholly-owned subsidiary, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB), has already mobilised two of its helicopters. The support worth some RM3.6 million for a two-week flood relief operation, is to assist the National Security Council (NSC) in its efforts in the East Coast.
Through another wholly-owned subsidiary PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB), PETRONAS has also contributed diesel and fuel worth RM20,000 – diesel for generator sets at relief centres and h ospitals while fuel for transportation to carry items to relief centres.
PETRONAS Senior General Manager, Group Strategic Communications, Norliza Kamaruddin said the company is deeply concerned for the well-being of those affected and PETRONAS hopes that the group-wide effort will help to ease their burden.
“This is the worst flood disaster in 30 years and it has devastated much of East Coast Malaysia where many parts of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang are inundated by flood waters, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes,” she added.
In addition to the helicopter service as well as diesel and fuel supplies, PETRONAS as a group has also contributed some RM600,000 worth of items to Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.
The items include cooking gas and stoves via PDB, raw food supplies, mineral water, blankets and mattresses, basic cleaning and personal hygiene kits, batteries, candles, torch lights, power banks and baby disposable diapers.
On top of that, PETRONAS has mobilised a disaster relief team comprising more than 100 volunteers among its employees based at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur; Klang Valley; East Coast Regional Office in Kemaman, Terengganu; and its subsidiaries, PETRONAS Chemical Group Berhad (PCGB) and PDB.
Meanwhile, PCGB has activated its “We Care Programme”, a staff Volunteer Programme for Flood Relief, whereby PCGB staff volunteers would contribute their time and money in the flood relief efforts, especially caring for the affected staff and help in clean-up activities. Over 90 PCGB staff have volunteered to help on site.
As an extension to the group-wide effort, PETRONAS and its Persatuan Isteri-Isteri Kakitangan dan Kakitangan Wanita PETRONAS (PETRONITA) is initiating a donation drive among its staff and members respectively, in anticipation of a third wave of flooding. Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC) has also conveyed their interest to collaborate with PETRONITA in this effort.
All donations collected will be used to purchase basic necessities and delivered to affected areas from 1 to 31 January 2015, with the assistance of Kelab Sukan dan Rekreasi PETRONAS (KSRP), PETRONAS Leadership Centre (PLC), Badan Kebajikan Islam PETRONAS (BAKIP) and established NGO (i.e. Muslim Care) through their teams on the ground. To date, BAKIP has contributed three shipments of food supplies garnered from individual donations.
Above all, PETRONAS will continue to provide assistance and plans are also in the pipelines for post flood relief aid.
