KUALA LUMPUR, November 20, 2023 - PETRONAS and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) have formalised a partnership to develop a glossary of environmental, social and governance (ESG) terms for communications on sustainability in Bahasa Melayu.
A team comprising PETRONAS, DBP, academia, governmental bodies and energy industry representatives will undertake the two-year project, curating up to 1,000 ESG-related terms to facilitate communications of critical ESG terms and concepts in the national language.
A partnership agreement was signed recently between both parties, witnessed by PETRONAS Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh and DBP Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dato’ Dr Mohd Anwar Ridhwan.
Tan Sri Mohd Bakke said the initiative is critical for clear messaging on sustainability and climate change in line with the demand for increased transparency and reporting on ESG matters.
"The ESG terms can act as a catalyst for mastering knowledge in this field. The emergence of new terms that align with the advancements in the energy, oil and gas industry is essential for the communication needs of industry players and the public and private sectors, higher education institutions, media organisations, and the public,” he added.
Mohd Anwar said that DBP welcomes any collaboration to strengthen the use of the Malay language in various fields of knowledge and industries.
"The partnership agreement today marks a historic moment as DBP is collaborating with PETRONAS for the first time. It is a starting point to forge a strategic relationship and a deeper understanding between DBP and PETRONAS through implementing various programmes," he said.
The signing of the agreement is a testament to PETRONAS and DBP's commitment towards enhancing ESG communications for inclusivity and national reach.
Once completed, the ESG glossary will be hosted on DBP's Pusat Rujukan Persuratan Melayu (PRPM).
