PETRONAS Enhances Human Capital Development with RM 71 million in PACD Research Grants

2024 Media Release - 20 Aug

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 August 2024 – PETRONAS has strengthened its commitment to human capital development by awarding RM71 million in research grants to academic institutions through the PETRONAS-Academia Collaboration Dialogue (PACD).

The funding is allocated to research areas aligned with emerging global trends, focusing on sectors such as low-carbon and renewable energy. These include carbon capture and storage systems, bioenergy development, efficient hydrogen generation, and enhancing operational efficiency through data analytics and artificial intelligence.

During the grant presentation ceremony, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Higher Education, YB Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud, together with Malaysia Petroleum Management Senior Vice President, Datuk Ir. Bacho Pilong, awarded the grants to 61 deserving recipients from 25 universities nationwide. The recipients were selected through a rigorous process from a competitive pool of 588 applicants.

YB Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud said, "As businesses adapt to shifting market demands, universities must also be proactive in anticipating and responding to global challenges. By aligning our research with sustainability goals, we ensure that our institutions remain relevant and impactful.”

Meanwhile, Datuk Ir. Bacho said, "The truth of the matter is, all forms of energy are needed to support a successful transition, and net zero doesn’t mean a world without oil and gas. At PETRONAS, we firmly embrace this reality and are determined to overcome the challenges ahead.”

He continued, "I firmly believe that one potential solution to the challenge of high capital investments needed for a sustainable future lies in technological breakthrough. This requires us to invest more in research and development, making collaboration between academia and industry vital."

This event exemplifies how industry support can significantly augment academic endeavors and drive national advancement. As research projects progress and attain technological readiness, recipients will have the opportunity for field trials and potential industry applications within the national energy sector. PETRONAS remains steadfast in its commitment to a low-carbon, low-emission future and sustainability by providing research grants focused on advancements in the renewable energy sector. Through these initiatives, PETRONAS aims to foster innovation and drive the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.
