A Brief History

PETRONAS first came into motorsport in the late 1980s as an avenue to expand the business in the domestic market. Our first involvement was in rally champion which we competed under the name of PETRONAS Eon Rally Team.

As business grew, so did our involvement, partnering with a Formula One team for the first time in 1995 with the Red Bull-Sauber PETRONAS F1 team.

The growth of our motorsports portfolio in Malaysia, regionally and globally, led to the formation of PETRONAS Motorsports in 1998 to enhance our brand association with motorsports events.   

And we only went further from there, becoming the title partner of the Malaysian Grand Prix in 1999 and continuing with Sauber until we partnered with Mercedes-Benz in 2009 on the Silver Arrows’ return to Formula One.`

Our partnerships stretch across both four-wheels and two-wheels. We are the title partner of the PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda Team focusing on talent development and as the fuel supplier for MotoGP’s Moto2™ and Moto3™ support competitions – supplying 40% non-fossil biofuel on our way to 100% sustainable fuel come 2027. And we always look forward to welcoming MotoGP™ to the annual PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix. Our passion for motorsport has never been greater.
